Miscellaneous records of Civil War regiments, 1861-1866, 1886.

Descriptive lists, order books, and other miscellaneous records of Wisconsin Civil War regiments, the majority of which are thought to have been collected by the Adjutant General during the 1880s as part of that office's effort to correct and complete the records of individual Civil War soldiers. Regiments represented are the 10th Light Artillery; the 1st, 3rd, and 4th cavalry regiments; and the 1st-3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th-13th, 18th, 21st, 24th-26th, and 30th infantry regiments.

An adjutant general was first appointed as an aide by the territorial governor in 1839. Over the next two decades the position gradually acquired more authority, supervising the everyday affairs of the state militia (WIHV91-A663). James H. Knight was a well known airmail pilot during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Buchanan, Michigan in 1892, Knight flew for the U.S. Air Mail Service from 1919 to 1927, serving assignments in College Park, Maryland, Chicago, Illinois, Cleveland, Ohio, Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Omaha, Nebraska.
